Lavender might not be the first plant you think of when you think of Kansas, but I hope to help you change that. Now here is where my Horticulture knowledge will come in, Lavendar requires three things to grow properly. First up, full sun, now if you are here for very long you know we definitely have full sun, especially in the summer months. Next, is Akaline soil which with our rocky soil here in Kansas can easily accommodate that growing requirement. Finally, the soil needs to be well-draining, and with all those rocks I am sure you can imagine that also works out very well here.
I know many people know lavender as an herb that helps with relaxation, but it also has so many additional benefits. Lavender Oil can help reduce pain, especially if you happen to have a sunburn. I know Lavender oil has been one of my best friends, next to aloe when I had a sunburn! Lavender is also a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. In addition, it can promote a good night's sleep, and help fight anxiety and even depression. It truly is an amazing herb, so it is no wonder Lavendar was revealed by Egyptian royalty and high priests who highly valued lavender.
While I know you might not be interested in making a lot of these products yourself, this is where our awesome lavender farmers come into play. These farmers make a variety of products for you to enjoy at home. They even sell their products online, at their farms, and even at the Manhattan Farmer's Market. If you are interested in the U-Pick option, there are a few events that happen towards the end of June as well.
