Founded in 1933 the Sunset Zoo has been a staple in the Manhattan community. Both Manhattan residents and Kansas State Veterinary Medicine have a passion for animals, especially ways that allow educational opportunities within our community. There have been several updates to the Zoo over the years. The most recent remodel added both event and educational spaces that can be used for children's programs throughout the year and also rented out by the community. Built into a hillside the sits on around 43 acres, the zoo uses roughly 26 of those for the public areas of the Zoo.
One of the most famous faces at the Zoo is Susie. At 66, she is the oldest living chimp in human care and loves to greet visitors. Make sure on your tour you stop by and say hi! I also find the Zoo is a great place to take a walk, especially if you are looking for a not so traditional place. It is such a relaxing place and not just because I am an animal lover. I enjoy the covered walkways and being surrounded by nature while on my walk. The hills also provide a great workout!
Both events allow visitors to enjoy the Zoo. For those that are adventurous animal lovers, these events allow visitors an opportunity to get a little more up close and personal with some of the animals. The event features great music, delicious food, and fantastic beverages. Tickets go quickly for both events so if you are interested in attending follow these links to learn more information!
