Palm Springs and Palm Desert

I love that we have all the seasons, sometimes at least twice a year here in Kansas, but that doesn’t mean in the cold of Winter I am thriving! This year we had some of the coldest temps on record so when I got the chance for a quick trip to Palm Desert I took it. Some sunshine and girl time was exactly what I needed!

If you have not looked into flying out of the Manhattan airport, you NEED to (Airport code MHK). Even just a week and a half prior to leaving I was able to grab a flight for a great price, although I would be up before the sun I kept telling myself it would be worth it! Funny enough, that morning my girlfriend that I was flying out with and I had the conversation that the 6 a.m. flight is ALWAYS a good idea until you are trying to go to sleep the night before and setting your alarm clock for 4 a.m.! Ugh, it is even painful to type!!

Regardless, we arrived at the airport in plenty of time, and as usual, security was a breeze and as usual, it was not nearly as stressful as it is at larger airports! We grabbed some drinks and waited for our flight, in just a few hours and one connection in Dallas, we would be basking in the California sun!

This was my first time flying into the Palm Springs Airport, my parents are road warriors so we were a road trip family when I was young. As we deboarded the plane everything seems like a usual airport, but a few steps into the terminal I heard birds chirping and then quickly noticed there it was, what we were chasing. The warm California SUNSHINE! Exiting the terminal I walked into one of the best airports I have EVER been to! The majority of the airport is open air, people were casually enjoying food and drinks before their flight. Families had blankets spread out on the grassy areas and enjoyed time before their flights eating and letting their kiddos burn off some energy on the jungle gyms!

After a short walk, we walked through into the main terminal area where my friends mom was waiting. Seriously, it was so easy and we were ready to explore. While some things were reduced due to the Pandemic and COVID restrictions the fresh mountain and spectacular views of the various mountain ranges and the Coachella Valley were perfect.

We enjoyed Palm Desert on the first day, taking in the architecture, scenery, a quick trip to a casino, and of course some sun! I for one had no idea how much the architecture in the area differed from Stucco desert cottages, classic ranch like you would see today, and then an abundance of both Mid-century modernism and Desert modernism. AS a REALTOR I always have to get in a little bit of real estate on my trips, so learning the difference in the modernism aspects was perfect!

On the second day, we made the quick trip to Palm Springs for a day of sightseeing, eating, shopping, and a few drinks along their main street, Palm Canyon Drive. Along Palm Canyon Drive there is a mix of both old and new buildings along the entire road which as I learned is quite common in the area. We choose our lunch spot at a family-owned Mexican restaurant which was kicked off by some delicious margarita’s! The food was excellent, I think I could have drank their salsa it was so good.

After lunch, we toured the different shops grabbed a couple of souvenirs, and then enjoyed touring the Palm Springs Walk of Stars! It was so much fun to casually walk and enjoy the stars! We also made a couple of stops so that we could rehydrate and try some other fun spots for drinks, including a awesome TIKI Bar called Tonga Hut!

On the last day, we stayed close to home and enjoyed Palm Desert again. What we thought was going to be a quick trip to the casino ended up being a little longer after we started winning! The Casino was non-smoking so it made it much more enjoyable to spend time in. After a little gambling, we enjoyed dinner at a local Tapas restaurant called, Cork-n-Fork. The food was great and much needed after a long day! A quick nightcap later at, The 19th Hole and we were home on our last night.

One of the things that amazed me most about the entire time we were there was how EASY it was to get around. It seemed like most places, even Palm Springs, were only about 20 min. away. If we needed an Uber there were always plenty and the people were very friendly. I know there several other things that we wished we could have gotten in, but it was a perfect getaway then back to reality!

When I make it back again and can stay a little longer I hope to get out and explore the area even more. Maybe a tour of the Joshua Tree National Park, a day hike, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, and then maybe do a little more shopping and stop by the El Paseo Shopping District.

Overall I would totally recommend a trip to the area, whether you are looking to explore a new area, if you are a golfer, or if you are like us and are chasing some sun. Side note, there are so many golf courses for people to enjoy that it would be perfect golf trip! The food was excellent, I wish I would have brought a bag just so I could pack home fresh fruits and veggies, I am not kidding when I say that I could not eat enough avocados while I was there!
